SaaS affiliate commission rates: how to set yours
Updated · 4 min read
Most SaaS affiliate programs pay 20–30% of each payment, recurring for 12 months or for the customer’s lifetime. The right number for you comes from your gross margin, churn and what you already pay to acquire a customer, and the formula below turns those into a ceiling.
What SaaS affiliate programs typically pay
SaaS commissions cluster in a narrow band because software has high gross margins and customers pay every month. Publicly listed programs mostly land here:
| Structure | Typical rate | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring, 12 months | 20–30% of each payment | Most B2B SaaS; caps your long-term cost |
| Recurring, lifetime | 15–25% of each payment | Low-churn products; attracts serious affiliates |
| One-time, first payment | 50–100% of the first month | Monthly plans with high early churn |
| Flat bounty | $50–$500 per paid customer | Annual or high-ticket plans; simple to explain |
| Hybrid | Sign-up bonus plus recurring % | Products with a free trial or freemium tier |
Treat these as a starting point, not a rule. A rate is only “competitive” relative to what the affiliate earns per hour of work, and that depends on your price and conversion rate as much as the percentage.
Recurring or one-time commissions
Recurring commissions pay the partner a share of every renewal for as long as the rule allows. They align the affiliate with retention: partners are rewarded for sending customers who stay, not just customers who sign up.
One-time commissions pay once, on the first payment. They are easier to budget and suit products where most value is captured up front, but they reward volume over fit, so expect more low-quality sign-ups.
- Choose recurring for a set number of months (12 is the most common) if you want the retention incentive with a known maximum cost.
- Choose lifetime recurring if churn is low and you want to stand out to affiliates who build long-term content.
- Choose first payment only if your plans are annual or high-ticket, where one payment is already a meaningful reward.
In Affiliatops you pick between first payment, a number of months, or lifetime per program, and can add a fixed bonus for sign-ups or trials. See pricing for which plans include the Stripe integration that tracks renewals automatically.
The most you can afford to pay
Start from customer lifetime value (LTV), the gross profit one customer brings in over their life with you. Then decide what share of it you are willing to spend on acquisition. Many SaaS companies aim to keep acquisition cost at or below one third of LTV.
LTV = monthly price × gross margin ÷ monthly churn
A $49/month plan at 80% margin with 4% monthly churn: 49 × 0.8 ÷ 0.04 = $980.
Max commission per customer = LTV ÷ 3 − other acquisition costs
With $980 LTV and about $60 of onboarding and sales cost per customer: 980 ÷ 3 − 60 ≈ $267.
Now check your structure against that ceiling. At 25% recurring for 12 months, the same customer earns the affiliate 49 × 0.25 × 12 = $147, well under $267, so you have room to raise the rate or add a sign-up bonus. At 30% lifetime, the expected payout is 49 × 0.30 ÷ 0.04 = $368, which is over the ceiling. The affiliate commission calculator runs these numbers for your own price, churn and margin.
Protect the rate with a hold period
A generous rate only works if you do not pay for customers who refund. Hold each commission for at least as long as your refund window, commonly 30 days, before it becomes payable.
If a refund arrives during the hold, the commission is cancelled. If it arrives after the commission was paid, deduct it from the partner’s next payout (a clawback). State both rules in your partner terms so nobody is surprised.
Affiliatops holds commissions for 30 days by default, cancels or reduces them when Stripe reports a refund, and deducts already-paid amounts from the next payout automatically. Our partner agreement shows how these rules can be worded.
Pay your best partners more
A single flat rate is simplest to launch with. Once a handful of partners drive most of your referrals, which is common, give them a higher rate rather than raising it for everyone.
- 1
Launch with one rate
Pick a rate inside your ceiling and keep it for the first two or three months so you can measure conversion.
- 2
Create a partner group for top performers
Move partners who pass a threshold, such as five paying customers, into a group with a higher percentage or a fixed amount per payment.
- 3
Review against LTV every quarter
Churn and price changes move your ceiling. Recalculate it before changing rates, and grandfather existing partners when you lower them.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good commission rate for a SaaS affiliate program?
Most SaaS programs pay 20–30% of each payment, recurring for 12 months or for the customer’s lifetime. Check the rate against your own customer lifetime value so the total paid per customer stays under your acquisition budget.
Should SaaS affiliate commissions be recurring?
Usually, yes. Recurring commissions reward affiliates for sending customers who stay, which matches how SaaS makes money. Cap them at 12 or 24 months if you want a predictable maximum cost.
How do I calculate affiliate commission for a subscription?
Multiply the payment amount by the commission rate for each payment the rule covers. At 25% of a $49 monthly plan for 12 months, the partner earns $12.25 a month, $147 in total if the customer stays the full year.
Do affiliates get paid if the customer asks for a refund?
Not if you use a hold period. Commissions stay pending until the refund window closes; a refund in that time cancels the commission. Refunds after payout are deducted from the partner’s next payout.
